Mermaid and Merman - Cornwall Portrait Photography

The Mermaid of Zennor is a popular Cornish folk tale that was first recorded by the Cornish folklorist William Bottrell in 1873. The legend has inspired works of poetry, literature and art over the years, so when I had the chance of attending a workshop being ran by Ultimate Resolutions at the Carnglaze Caverns photographing mermaids and mermen I jumped at the chance.

Mermaids appear in the folklore of many cultures worldwide, including Europe, Africa and Asia. The first stories appeared in ancient Assyria, in which the goddess Atargatis transformed herself into a mermaid out of disgrace for unintentionally killing her human lover.

The venue for this workshop, Carnglaze Caverns, was superb, it gave the atmosphere of mystical legend and folklore that cannot be found anywhere else in Cornwall.  On arrival at the Caverns and infused with anticipation of getting creative with the light and reflections in the Caverns I entered the eerie underground world of Cornwall.  This was my first visit to the Caverns and I was amazed at the size and beauty of this once working slate quarry.

The event organiser, Penny Davis of Ultimate Resolution, formulated today's workshop extremely well.  The models were absolutely stunning and fitted the bill perfectly.  There was also a team of Make Up Artists and Hair Stylist to hand to ensure that the models were looking their very best.

The following photographs are just a few from the workshop.
